SALEM, Mass. - Calling it the most significant building project in the college's history, Salem State's Jan Napora launched the official start of the Central Campus renovation when she introduced acting governor Jane Swift and other dignitaries to a crowd that gathered outside the old GTE-Sylvania Buidling on Loring Avenue Monday.
The ceremony (outside of Building One on Central Campus) marked the launching of Phase One of Salem State College's Central Campus project which will provide a new concert hall and a new home for the school of business.
Swift called the project, "one of the most exciting innovations in Massachusetts higher education." The acting governor went on to praise the college for its investment in the future and people on the North Shore.
Salem Mayor Stan Usovicz, Dr. Judith Gill, (the Chancelor of the Board of Higher Education), Rep. John Tierney, Rep. J. Michael Ruane, Dan Munroe (excutive director of the Peabody Essex Museum), and David Ives (chairman of the Salem State College Assistance Corporation) were among those who attended.
The $15 million Phase One construction targets the renovation of Building One for the School of Business, the Music Department and Information Technology. Building One will also house academic and administrative areas as well as service facilities.
