Salem, Mass. - Donna Disario, a 41-year-old freshman at Salem State College, won "Best of Show" at the recent Marblehead Arts Festival. Disario, a Newbury resident, received the award for her essay titled "Standing in God's Canvas."
The longtime Newbury artist and photographer originally wrote the essay as an assignment for a Salem State College Composition I course. Susan Butterworth, SSC English professor and instructor for the Composition I course, suggested that Disario enter the essay in the "Writers World" exhibit at the well-known North Shore festival."After I read her essay, I immediately thought this would be excellent for the Marblehead Arts Festival," observed Butterworth. "Once I heard that she won 'Best of Show' I was very excited and pleased for her," she added.
A non-traditional student, studying art education with a minor in music, Disario decided to go back to school last fall and has just completed her first year at Salem State College. "My first year at Salem State has been a dream come true and the beginning of a personal odyssey focused into reality by the professors at the college," reflected Disario.
In addition to her recent success at the festival, Disario was recently informed that two of her works have been published in "Writers World 2002- A collection of winning essays". " I am honored. In Comp I, Professor Susan Butterworth set me loose into the beautiful garden of free writing which led me to win 'Best of Show' and my recent publications, an experience I will always treasure," explains Disario.
