SALEM, Mass. - A new major in occupational therapy at Salem State College has received initial accreditation status from The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).
The part-time evening and weekend program is designed for the occupational therapy assistants (with an associate's degree) to complete a bachelor's degree. It is one of only 10 programs in the country to offer a curriculum designed specifically for occupational therapy assistants to advance their degree. It is the only occupational therapy program in the country with a part-time evening model.
According to the Accreditation Council, "The occupational therapy program at Salem State is applauded for its conceptual model of the curriculum design and for designing a curriculum that recognizes the special needs of the adult learner."
Assistant professor Jeramie Silveira serves as the chairperson for the new department while assistant professor Jeanne Corcoran serves as academic fieldwork coordinator.
