SALEM,
Mass. - The Honorable Michael E. Haynes, senior minister of the Twelfth
Baptist Church, Inc. in Boston, will be featured speaker at the annual Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation Jan. 22, 2001, at Salem State College.
The event, free and open to the public, will begin at 11 a.m. in the SSC
Mainstage Auditorium, 352 Lafayette Street, Salem, MA. Haynes is a Roxbury native who has served three terms in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, was a 16-year member of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Parole Board and currently serves on the Boston Fair Housing Commission. He has been deeply involved in the life of his community, serving on some 40 social welfare, recreational, criminal justice, governmental, educational and religious boards.A graduate of the New England School of Theology, Haynes pursued additional studies at Gordon College, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and the Boston University School of Social Work. He has received honorary degrees from Gordon College, Northeastern University, Salem State College, and the University of Massachusetts-Boston. Among Haynes's many civic and religious affiliations are the boards of the Lausanne Committee on World Evangelism, New England Baptist Hospital, Northeastern University, the Boys' and Girls' Clubs of Boston and the Evangelistic Association of New England. In addition, he is a trustee emeritus for the Boston Plan for Excellence in the Public Schools. The day's events will include a campus leadership breakfast prior to the convocation.
