Dr. Gail Dines' talk on violence and pornography launches Women's History Month

A lecture and slide presentation on the effects of pornography on society will launch a series of events marking Women's History Month at Salem State College.

Dr. Gail Dines will present "Pornography and the Media: Images of Violence Against Women" at 11 a.m., Monday, March 5 at Veterans Hall in the Campus Center building on the North Campus of Salem State College.

Dines' presentation explores the relationship between commercially produced images of violence against women and real world violence. Her talk will address the following questions:

  • How does pornography affect the way women and men see themselves, their sexual relationships and their bodies?
  • How do pornographic images create a climate where rape and violence are legitimized, normalized and taken for granted?
  • How does pornography demonize black men as rapists?
  • What is the impact of changing technologies, from the VCR to the Internet, on the production, content and consumption of pornography?
