Salem State College's Biology Department, recipient of the 2001 Departmental Award for Academic and Scholarly Achievement, was honored at the College's 20th Annual Academic Convocation on Monday, Sept. 10.

Many past and present Biology Department faculty members were on hand for the presentation of the award to Professor Susan Case, chairperson of the Biology Department, and Dr. Anita Shea, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. Professor Case also delivered the Convocation address.

Dr. Nancy Harrington, President and Dr. Laverna M. Saunders, Acting Vice President of Academic Affairs, presented the award and read aloud the citation given to the Biology Department for their service to students, College and community.

The citation states in part: "Students commend the Biology faculty for their high expectations, interest, enthusiasm and support. Whether the graduates pursue graduate school, industrial or clinical research, or teaching upon graduation, their education provides them with an excellent foundation for success. No greater tribute can be made to a department than the superior performance of its students."

The award is presented each year at Academic Convocation to a department whose members have demonstrated a commitment to and compiled a record of academic excellence.
