Student Health Insurance
Please Note: The waiver/enrollment process for the academic year 2013-2014 has ended. Please return to this site the first week in July to complete the waiver or enrollment process for the new academic year 2014-2015. The cost is subject to change and will be reflected at that time.
Massachusetts State Law requires that all students enrolled in at least 75 percent of a full-time course load at an institution of higher learning in Massachusetts must participate in a student health insurance program or in a health insurance plan with comparable coverage. Massachusetts colleges and universities are required to sponsor a health plan for students who do not have health insurance. A charge is added to a student's account in the fall term based on criteria mentioned above. The Salem State University student accident and sickness insurance plan is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield and administered by University Health Plans. The premium for the academic 2013-2014 year is $1,498 and the policy is in effect from August 1, 2013 until July 31, 2014.
To comply with state law, all students taking at least 3/4 of a full-time course load MUST either waive out of or enroll in the Salem State University student accident and sickness insurance plan online beginning the first week of July 2013 by doing the following:
- Waive out of the Salem State University student accident and sickness insurance plan. This hyperlink will take you to the University Health Plans Web site. Select the first "Click Here." The Web site will give you instructions on how to waive the plan. You will be asked to provide information on your insurance coverage. To be eligible to waive out of the plan, you must be currently enrolled in a health insurance plan with comparable coverage either as a dependent (on parent’s or spouse’s plan), or through a plan you have at your place of employment or have purchased yourself. A Commonwealth Care Plan or free care is not acceptable. Once information is provided, a credit will be reflected on your account within three business days as waiver health insurance $1,498. The deadline for waiving out of the student accident and sickness insurance plan is September 30, 2013.
- Enroll online in the Salem State University student accident and sickness insurance plan. This hyperlink will take you to the University Health Plans Web site. The Web site will give you information about the plan and instructions on how to enroll. By enrolling online you confirm your acceptance of the plan. Your name will be submitted for your insurance card once it is determined that you either have sufficient financial aid to cover your bill, you have enrolled in a payment plan, you have paid your bill in full or any combination. The deadline for enrolling in the student accident and sickness insurance plan is September 30, 2013.
IMPORTANT: All students registered for 3/4 time of a full course load (9 or more credit hours for an undergraduate student and 6.75 credit hours for a graduate student) MUST go online and either waive out of or enroll in the insurance by September 30, 2013.
