Student Health Insurance
Massachusetts state law requires that all students enrolled in at least 75 percent of a full-time course load at an institution of higher learning in Massachusetts must participate in a Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) or in a health insurance plan with comparable coverage. Massachusetts colleges and universities are required to sponsor a health plan for students who do not have health insurance. A charge is added to a student's account in the fall term based on criteria mentioned above. The Salem State University Student Health Plan is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield and administered by University Health Plans. The premium for the academic 2016-2017 year is $2,511 and the policy is in effect from August 1, 2016 through July 31, 2017.
To comply with state law, all students registered for at least 75 percent of a full course load (nine or more credit hours for an undergraduate student and 6.75 credit hours for a graduate student) must go online and either waive out of or enroll in the insurance plan by September 30, 2016.
Waive out of the Salem State University Student Health Plan. You will be asked to provide information on your insurance coverage. To be eligible to waive out of the plan, you must be currently enrolled in a health insurance plan with comparable coverage either as a dependent (on parent’s or spouse’s plan), or through a plan you have at your place of employment or have purchased yourself. Please note: MassHealth Limited, Health Safety Net and Children’s Medical Security Plan are not acceptable plans. Once information is provided, a credit will be reflected on your account within three business days as waiver health insurance $2,511. The deadline for waiving out of the student accident and sickness insurance plan is September 30, 2016.
Or enroll online in the Salem State University Student Health Plan. By enrolling online you confirm your acceptance of the plan. You will be assigned a member id number and your name will be submitted to Blue Cross Blue Shield to be added to the doctor and pharmacy databases. An insurance card will be mailed to you within 10-11 business days. The deadline for enrolling in the student accident and sickness insurance plan is September 30, 2016.
Or new for 2016-17: If you are covered by MassHealth (other than MassHealth Limited, Health Safety Net or Children’s Medical Security Plan), you may be eligible to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and have the premium paid by MassHealth Premium Assistance. To see if you are eligible, select the Waiver Form or Enrollment Form link and follow the prompts.
