Chemistry & Physics
Programs
We offer both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry, as well
as minors in both chemistry and physics. Secondary Ed Minors are also supported in
Chemistry. Our curriculum will prepare you for careers or further study in chemistry,
biochemistry, pharmacology, medicine, dentistry, computer, health & environmental
sciences, oceanography, business, law, and teaching.
The B.S. curriculum is approved by the American Chemical Society Committee on
Professional Training which will, upon faculty recommendation, certify students who
satisfactorily complete this course of study.

Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry
In addition to 40-41 credits in chemistry, a year of math is taken before starting the
physics sequence PHS 211-212 or PHS 213-214. All B.A. candidates must take the calculus
sequence up to the level of MAT 310, Calculus III. (In your freshman year, you’ll start
your calculus sequence at a level depending upon your math preparation.) We recommended
that you also take MAT 311, Calculus IV, and MAT 413, Ordinary Differential Equations,
which will usually qualify you for a minor in Mathematics. The minimum number of credits
necessary to earn a B.A. in Chemistry is 127.
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
Chemistry credits range from 48-49, and 120 minimum total credits are necessary for the
B.S. in Chemistry. The elective credits in the B.S. program may be taken in any area of
approved study. Your advisor will recommend these according to your educational goals.
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry - ACS Approved
The ACS approved option is a more rigorous program, reviewed and approved by the ACS Committee on Professional Training. Upon successful completion of this program and recommendation of the faculty, you will receive a certificate from the ACS Committee on Professional Training. The degree includes 53 credits hours of chemistry and requires support courses in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science. Students must complete a research project. A minimum of 120 credits is required for graduation.
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (Biochemistry Concentration)
Chemistry Minor
A minor in chemistry may be earned by taking sequences CHE 124-125 or CHE 130-131, and
then CHE 212-213. CHE 331-332 may be substituted for CHE 212-213 with permission of the
Department Chairperson.
Physics Minor
The minor in Physics is earned by taking the complete sequence PHS 211-212 or PHS 213-214,
and PHS 311-312. The student is advised to check the mathematics prerequisites for each
physics course when planning the minor program. Students unable to maintain a B average in
the PHS 211-212 or PHS 213-214 course sequence and in calculus courses are discouraged from
electing a minor in Physics. Further information concerning the Minor in Physics can be
obtained from the Department Chairperson.
Secondary Education Minor in Chemistry
A Secondary Education Minor may be elected by students wishing to teach secondary school
Chemistry. Students may pursue either the B.A. or B.S. degrees in Chemistry. Students planning
to pursue the Secondary Education minor should see page 258 in the Education section of the
2004-2006 College Catalog for requirements for teacher licensure. The Minor in Secondary Ed
requires the following courses:
