Program for Certificate of Competency in Travel and Tourism
A Competency Certificate is an official recognition that a student has satisfactorily completed a specific core of courses as determined by the academic department and, therefore, has had an in-depth exposure to the special field and has achieved a level of competency in the skill area.
Travel & Tourism Certificate Program
Overview
The tourism education program at Salem State College has recently been certified by the United Nations - World Tourism Organization, an award granted to only 8 other colleges in North America. This program will open your eyes to new ideas and open the employment door to new career path opportunities. Students will examine current trends in travel and tourism and will explore the social, cultural and environmental issues surrounding tourism. Courses will cover topical areas such as: using tourism for economic development; marketing tourism; international perspectives on tourism; impacts of travel; understanding local tourism initiatives; special events; ecotourism; and recreation.
Consider this program if you are:
- Currently employed but seeking new career path
- Re-entering workforce
- Wanting to work in the travel & tourism industry but don't know where to begin
- Currently employed in travel, but seeking to become more knowledgeable in the field
- Looking to acquire a basic travel & tourism education foundation

The Certificate of Competency in Travel and Tourism will be awarded to students satisfactorily completing six (6) courses as indicated above. A minimum grade-point average of 3.0 must be maintained for courses taken at Salem State College.
