Salem State College's award-winning Student Theatre Ensemble (STE) is thrilled to present a drama by Susan Yankowitz, "Night Sky." Ms. Yankowitz, of New York City, will be attending opening night on March 27.

The play focuses on an astronomer named Anna, played by Kristina Spinney, who loses her ability to speak due to a condition called aphasia, brought on by an automobile accident. The play deals with the endless possibilities of space compared to the human mind as Anna struggles with language as her words and thoughts escape her.

Aphasia is a disorder that affects the left side of the brain, limiting a patient's ability to communicate clearly. It destroys the process in the brain to select or understand words. In the play, Anna's speech is not formed as a sentence, but through the metaphors she manages to speak.

The play is directed by Saori Kaneko, an international student from Japan. Kaneko compares her own experience coming to the United States to that of Anna. "Some people say the feeling of Aphasia is similar to what you feel when you are in a foreign country for the first time; that you know exactly what you want to say, but it is just not coming out in the right way. I've experienced the similar situations. When you are in that kind of situation, you feel the weight of one word."

The play also features Joey Mirabile of Salem, Tania Buonopane of Medford, Greg Davis of Merrimac, Alexander Cote of Amesbury, Katelyn Collins of Bourne, and Zachary Winston of Milton.

The Student Theatre Ensemble is a group and club of SSC funded by the Student Government Association. The group produces a number of shows throughout the academic year as well as musicals during its summer season.
