Leanne Harris, Head Coach
Leanne Harris has been named head coach for the 2007 Salem State College softball season announced the college's athletic director Tim Shea.
Harris, who earned All-America honors as a power-hitting centerfielder for SSC in 1999, was inducted into the college's Hall of Fame last October. Harris replaces Kristan Steele, who recently stepped down after guiding the program for two years.
"Leanne was an outstanding player when she attended the college as an undergraduate," said Shea. "She has been coaching at the high school level for the last few years and is now capable to take on the challenge of directing a collegiate program."
Harris, who was inducted into the Wilmington High School Hall of Fame this year and was the head varsity softball coach at Arlington High for the past four years, is a 2000 graduate of the college. In addition to being a softball All-America selection, Harris was also an outstanding field hockey player. She served as a four-year captain in field hockey, being named a first team All-Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) member three times.
In softball, Harris was a four-time All-New England and All-MASCAC first team selection and a four-year captain. She was a two-time (1999 & 2000) recipient of the SSC President's Cup Award, given annually to the college's top female athlete. Harris produced one of the finest seasons in SSC softball history when she batted .465, belted a school record and MASCAC-leading 13 homeruns and knocked in 57. She was named 1999 MASCAC softball player of the year.
"It's honor to be named interim head softball coach," said Harris. "My hope is to bring back the winning tradition the program experienced in the past."
