Presidential Arts Scholarship
These renewable $1000 scholarships are awarded, regardless of financial need, to students who demonstrate outstanding artistic and academic achievements in Art, Creative Writing, Dance, Music, and Theater.
Deadline: March 1st of each year (with FAFSA on file by February 1)

Scholarship Applicants
All Disciplines– Application Requirements:
- Please contact the department chair in the area of your creative expertise for more specific application and audition requirements. Deadlines are commonly set for early February.

Scholarship Renewals
All Disciplines– Minimum Renewal Requirements:
- All Presidential Arts Scholars MUST be enrolled as full time students with a major or a minor in the discipline in which he/she presently has a Presidential Arts Scholarship.
- All Presidential Arts Scholars MUST maintain a 3.0 grade point average in his/her field of study.
- All Presidential Arts Scholars MUST meet with his/her faculty advisor and/or faculty review committee within his/her department to determine goals for the upcoming semester.
- All Presidential Arts Scholars will submit a self-evaluation stating his/her contributions and personal growth as a Presidential Arts Scholar. This self-evaluation will be included with the renewal application submitted to the your appropriate department chairperson no later than March 1.
- All Presidential Arts Scholars will be reviewed by their department and a recommendation for renewal of the Presidential Arts Scholarship will be made by the department chairperson. This recommendation must be included with the reapplication request submitted to the Director of the Center for Creative and Performing Arts no later than February 1.
- In addition to the above criteria, each discipline has specific criteria for Presidential Arts Scholars to be evaluated on in their area of expertise. These criteria are listed below.
Art– Specific Renewal Requirements:
- Renewal applicants in the studio areas must provide a ten-piece portfolio of new work and present this to the chairperson of the Art Department for evaluation.
- Renewal applicants in the Art History Concentration must provide new research as demonstrated by written scholarship and present this to the chairperson of the Art Department for evaluation.
- Renewal applicants in the Art Education Concentration must provide either a ten-piece portfolio of new work or new research as demonstrated by written scholarship and present this to the chairperson of the Art Department for evaluation.
Fine Arts– Specific Renewal Requirements:
- The recipient MUST maintain a MINIMUM of four (4) hours per week in department support functions. These functions will be involved in, but not limited to, the recipient's major concentration or area of specialization.
- The recipient MUST demonstrate outstanding creativity and artistic quality in their studio or research work. The faculty review committee requests faculty recommendations, and art portfolios or research in support of this criterion. See chairperson of the Art Department for information.
- The recipient MUST exhibit in the Student Awards Show if appropriate to his/her Concentration in the Art Major.
Creative Writing– Specific Renewal Requirements:
- The recipient MUST submit material for publication each semester to Soundings East or other appropriate literary magazines or competitions.
- The recipient MUST submit in the fall semester, materials for consideration as suitable for the annual student readings in the Writers' Series.
- The recipient MUST, after completing first-year requirements, participate in the Creative Writing academic program.
- The recipient MUST participate in the production of Soundings East. 5. Recipients MUST continue to build their portfolio and present this to the faculty advisor for Presidential Arts recipients.
Dance– Specific Renewal Requirements:
- The recipient is required to audition/interview for EVERY department piece and production.
- The recipient is required to perform in ONE (1) department workshop or concert PER SEMESTER and choreograph AT LEAST ONE (1) PIECE to be performed in the spring semester.
- He/She MUST assist in the growth of the area of dance within the Salem State College community and Dance Club. Such requirements should include assisting faculty, publicity, contacting fellow dancers, as well as contributing in any way needed to the departmental productions.
Music– Specific Renewal Requirements:
- The recipient must demonstrate outstanding creativity and artistic quality in music. Ensemble preparation practice must consist of at least two hours per week. Musical leadership in ensembles must be demonstrated.
- The recipient must participate in a total of three (3) performing ensembles per year.
- The recipient must participate in a minimum of four (4) hours per week of departmental support functions.
Theatre– Specific Renewal Requirements for Recipients in Theatre:
- The recipient is required to audition/interview for EVERY department production.
- The recipient is required to participate in the two (2) department productions each semester.
- He/She MUST have a major position in one show EACH semester, (ie., a lead role, stage manager, assistant director, assistant to lighting designer, assistant to costume designer, assistant to office manager).
- He/She MUST have a minor position in one show EACH semester, (ie., run crew, house crew, box office staff, minor role, etc.).
