On the evening of November 12, 2009, Elaine Showalter, professor emerita Princeton University, will give a talk at Salem State College called ''Jewett’s Critical Juries.'' Professor Showalter is the author of the groundbreaking 1978 study, ''A Literature of Their Own: British Women Novelists From Brontë to Lessing,'' and has recently published a new book, ''A Jury of Her Peers: American Women Writers From Anne Bradstreet to Annie Proulx.'' Billed as ''the first comprehensive history of American women writers from 1650 to 2000, ''A Jury of Her Peers" will be available at the book signing following the talk, which will begin at 7:30 pm in the Recital Hall on Central Campus, CC 158. A reception with light refreshments will follow.
Professor Showalter will focus on Sarah Orne Jewett as part of the Salem State College English department's year-long celebration of the Maine writer (1849-1909). Jewett was voted as the writer of the year among other candidates with anniversaries ending in nine. The department kicked off the year with a cake for Jewett’s 160th birthday on September 3, and faculty and students traveled by bus to the Jewett house in South Berwick, Maine. We are very pleased that Professor Showalter will be with us November 12 as part of our Jewett celebration.
Sponsored by the English department and the School of Arts and Sciences. Free and open to the Salem State community.
Refreshments will be served.
