Sociology Department International Trip 2011: Wine and High Fashion Tour

  

FRENCH RIVIERA AND NORTHERN ITALY TOUR
March 11 - March 19, 2011


ITINERARY:

MAR 11– BOSTON~INTERMEDIATE CITY~NICE: Depart Boston’s Logan International Airport aboard our transatlantic flight to Nice, France (via an intermediate city) with full meal and beverage service, as well as stereo headsets, available in-flight.

MAR 12 – NICE, FRANCE: Arrival at the airport in Nice where we will be met by our Tour Escort who will assist with our transfer. Check-in at first-class Hotel Novotel Nice (or similar) in Nice, on the Côte d’Azur. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to familiarize ourselves with our surroundings. “Welcome Dinner” this evening at our hotel. Overnight. (D)

MAR 13 – FRENCH RIVIERA SIGHTSEEING: Breakfast at our hotel. We will enjoy full-day touring on the beautiful French Riviera, beginning in Nice with a guided walking tour of the Old Town and a leisurely drive along the famous Baie des Anglais. We will then stroll along the promenade to take-in some of the historic sites, such as the Hotel Negresco. Next on our agenda is a visit to Monte Carlo, including a panoramic tour of the city and a visit to the Royal Palace or the Monte Carlo Casino, depending on time available. Return to the hotel to freshen-up and have dinner. And then we are off for a night at the Casino in Cannes, for those that feel lucky! Overnight. (BB, D)

MAR 14 – AIX-EN-PROVENCE: Breakfast at our hotel. Another wonderful full-day excursion has been planned for us this day when we visit the capital of the Provence region, which is also the home of the famous French impressionist painter, Paul Cezanne. Our morning will be occupied with a walking tour of the Old Town section of the city, led by a local guide. After time for lunch (on our own) in Aix-en-Provence, we will have an opportunity to visit Cezanne's workshop. Return to the hotel for dinner at the hotel. Overnight. (BB, D)

MAR 15 – NICE~MILAN~BAVENO: Breakfast and hotel check-out. Morning departure from Nice, heading across the Italian border to Baveno on Lake Maggiore in the Northern Lakes Region. En route, we will stop in vibrant Milan, Italy’s center of commerce and fashion. Our guided walking tour includes a visit to the massive Duomo (the largest Gothic cathedral in Italy), entrance to the Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie (which is home to Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper”) and a tour of the world’s most renowned opera hall – La Teatro alla Scala – which was constructed in 1776. Continue-on to Baveno where we will check-in at the 4-star Hotel Splendid (or similar). Dinner and overnight. (BB, D)

MAR 16 – LAKE MAGGIORE CRUISE & STRESA: Breakfast at our hotel. Depart from the boat landing in Baveno aboard our lake cruiser on an informative guided tour around the Borromean Islands. We will visit the beautiful island of Isola Bella, which is particularly renowned for the Palazzo Borromeo with its art gallery and magnificent Italian garden. Following our cruise, we will stop in Stresa, the international resort on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, for lunch at a local restaurant. We will then have some free time to explore Stresa on our own and shop-and browse through the many chic boutiques. Return to our hotel in Baveno for dinner and overnight. (BB, L, D)

MAR 17 – BAVENO~VERONA~PADUA~VENICE: Breakfast and hotel check-out. This morning, we will depart Baveno crossing to the Adriatic Coast and Venice. En route, we will stop in Verona, the city immortalized in Shakespeare’s “Two Gentlemen of Verona” and “Romeo and Juliet”. We will be taken on a sightseeing tour of the city, including the Church of San Zeno, Piazza Bra and The Arena, Piazza delle Erbe (with its marketplace), Piazza dei Signori, the Tombs of the Della Scala Family, and the House of Juliet on the Via Capello. Next, we will stop in Padua for lunch (on our own) and to visit the Basilica of St. Anthony. Later in the afternoon, we will continue-on to “The Queen of the Adriatic” – Venice – where we will check-in at the 4-star Hotel Petit Palais (or similar) on Lid di Venezia. Dinner and overnight. MAR 18 – VENICE: Breakfast at our hotel. Our morning guided sightseeing tour of Venice begins in Piazza San Marco where there are many galleries, shops, and charming cafés. We will also visit the Doge's Palace and cross the Bridge of Sighs which connects to the Piombi Prisons. The afternoon is at leisure for independent sightseeing, shopping-and-browsing, or just relaxing. Dinner and overnight at our hotel. (BB, D)

MAR 19 – VENICE~INTERMEDIATE CITY~BOSTON: Breakfast and hotel check-out. Transfer to the Venice’s Marco Polo Airport to board our return flight to Boston (via an intermediate city) with full meal and beverage service, as well as stereo headsets, available in-flight. (BB)
