Professor Johnston's areas of specialty include the history of photography and American Art. Her book, Real Fantasies: Edward Steichen's Advertising Photography, (University of California Press, 1997) analyzes Steichen's commercial photography from its early naturalistic style through increasingly calculated attempts to construct consumer fantasies. The book also investigates advertising industry dynamics and consumer culture during the 1920's and 1930's. It was the winner of the 1998 award for the best book on communication history from the History Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Professor Johnston's articles and reviews of photography and contemporary art have appeared in Afterimage, Art New England, Views, Exposure, Technology and Culture, and others. For the 1999-2000 academic year she will hold fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University. Professor Johnston teaches 19th and 20th Century Art; History of Photography; African, Native American and Oceanic Art; Topics in Contemporary Art; and the Arts in America.
