Salem State College's
certificate programs offer in depth introductions to specialized fields,
equip students with necessary entry level skills, and provide training
for those desiring to enrich or advance their careers.
A competency certificate
is an official recognition that a student has satisfactorily completed
specific courses required by the academic department.

Purpose
Salem State College has designed this certificate program for those individuals
who wish to further their education in the world of art and design. Graphic
design focuses on providing print and non print media resources for businesses
and other organizations. Trained professionals in this field provide solutions
to many complex design and advertising problems, as well as develop the
actual printed media piece.
Salem State College's
Art Major Program is nationally accredited by the National Association
of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The certificate program in Graphic
Design combines an intensive program of training in the technical knowledge
and skills of the computer graphics field with a rigorous academic program
in art and design. This program deals with the planning and design of
graphic materials for advertising, desktop publishing, corporate art,
graphic production and web design.
Students will develop
the necessary software skills with QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, and
Adobe Photoshop among g others, which will enable them to pursue new entry
level employment opportunities in the graphics field.

The Certificate of
Competency in Graphic Design will be awarded to students satisfactorily
completing 9 courses in Art & Graphic Design as indicated above.
The individual must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 as a minimum
for courses taken at Salem State College.
*A total of 9 credits
may be transferred from other accredited institutions.

Information
Courses are available
through the Division of Continuing Education as well as the Day College
programs. Some courses may not be available in the evening during a specific
semester and may be taken on a space available basis in the day program.

Computer
Resources
Resources include
two state of the art Computer Graphics Labs which are equipped with a
network of of Macintosh G4 Computers, color printers, color scanners,
and projection systems for easy student participation in teacher led software
instruction.
Internships are offered
with many prominent advertising agencies, corporate graphics studios,
desktop publishing companies and service bureaus, allowing students to
earn academic credit while gaining hands on experience working in the
field.
