Michael I. Prochilo Scholarship Benefit

The English Department of Salem State College is hosting a wine and appetizer party to endow a scholarship in memory of Professor Michael I. Prochilo. Long time colleague Dr. Richard Elia has graciously donated wines to complement selected appetizers. Join us for some reminiscences of Mike.

Remembering Mike

Professor Emeritus Michael Prochilo, a member of the English Department for 38 years, passed away in September 2006. Mike built the Secondary Education program for the SSC English Department, careful to make certain that it met both Commonwealth and NCATE requirements for accreditation. Those who earned their teaching licenses under Mike's tutelage know that his dedication insured that student teachers from Salem have a reputation for stellar preparation.

The English Department and the College community have rallied to create a scholarship in Dr. Prochilo's name. Friends and colleagues donated to a seed fund; now we are working to endow it sufficiently to make it an annual award. The Michael I. Prochilo Scholarship will help English Majors in the secondary education program, especially during student teaching. Some fine prospective teachers simply cannot afford to stop working to participate in a full semester of student teaching. That experience is invaluable, especially when it is configured to supply guided instruction and ongoing feedback, precisely as Dr. Prochilo envisioned.
