Salem State University Mission Statement

Salem State's mission is to provide a high quality, student-centered education that prepares a diverse community of learners to contribute responsibly and creatively to a global society, and serve as a resource to advance the region's cultural, social and economic development.

Mentoring Program Purpose

The purpose of the Salem State University Mentoring Program is to connect SSU alumni with current SSU students to provide career-related advice, share professional and personal knowledge and experiences, be a strong support system and engage and encourage students to become active alumni upon completion of the college studies.

What is Mentoring?

A. Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee.
B. A collaboration between caring individuals, and those needing support in various life domains including academic, social and vocational development using activities and communicative efforts designed to enhance self esteem, academic growth, and social empowerment.

2. Improve leadership and communication skills
3. Develop patience, insight and understanding
4. Encourage and develop growth and confidence
5. Guide students in finding resources and various opportunities
6. Support new behaviors, attitudes and goals
7. Gain experience for future careers in various fields of employment
8. Ignite motivation

 

Goals of the Mentoring Program

Provide an opportunity for young men and women to network with Salem State University alumni
Connect SSU students with SSU alumni of similar career interests and objectives
Foster professional growth of future alumni
Engage and encourage students to become active alumni

Role of the Mentor

Encourage and motivate mentees
Willingness to share knowledge and experiences
Support mentee based on her/his unique developmental needs
Teach through modeling and instilling confidence by developing a strong relationship with a mentee
Provide ongoing guidance, instruction, and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee
Identify resources to assist mentee enhance personal development and career growth

Role of a Mentee

Willingness to explore new ideas
Develop good listening and communication skills
Build a professional network for future collaboration
Access networking opportunities and receive direction for future career goals
Help mentees achieve personal goals
