Advisor Assignments

Adivising DayYour student status – day, evening, transfer, or graduate – determines how and when you will be advised. If you have any questions after scanning the following descriptions, please contact Academic Advising.

Day student vs. Evening student—
what's the difference?

Day Students
If you are a Day student, you'll be assigned to a faculty advisor in your major. If you are Undeclared, you'll be assigned a faculty advisor through the Interdisciplinary Studies Dept., and that faculty member will be your First Year Seminar Instructor (IDS 108 and IDS 109, which are required courses).

Day students should make an appointment with their faculty advisor whenever it seems necessary, but at least twice a semester. One of these appointments should be just prior to the time for pre-registration.

How to register for Day classes

Evening Students (Continuing Education)

If you are an Evening student, you should meet with a professional advisor in Academic Advising whenever necessary, but at least once a semester or upon the completion of each 12 to 15 credits toward your degree.

If you have any questions, please contact us at advising@salemstate.edu or call 978-542-7049 to speak to an advisor or to make an appointment.

Transfer Students

If you are a student transferring from a college or university to SSC, please see Transfer Admissions and Articulation . After being accepted, you'll receive a Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE), which lists courses that are being accepted here and their course equivalency. Many times, a course is in question and will come back in the evaluation as “department discretion,” which means that a class' course description from your previous school(s) needs to be submitted to the Chair of the appropriate department.

Day student transfer credits are handled through the Transfer Admissions and Articulation and the Registrar's Office. Evening student transfer credits are handled through Academic Advising and the Registrar's Office.

When Continuing Education students are accepted, Academic Advising makes every attempt possible to complete the evaluation within two weeks of receipt of the students' folder from the Admissions Office.
