Meet the Staff
Mary E. Dunn
Assistant DeanDr. Dunn joined Salem State College in 1994 and served as Director of Transfer Admissions since 2000. With over 25 years of admissions experience in higher education, she previously held the positions of Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Regis College, Director of Transfer Admissions at the University of Massachusetts at Boston and positions in college admissions at Salem State College and Fisher College. Dr. Dunn holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, a master’s in business administration from Suffolk University and a bachelor's degree in education from Salem State College. Dr. Dunn is actively involved in many professional education organizations and enjoys meeting people and traveling.
Alvaro Ibanez
Assistant Director
Mr. Ibanezis a native of Colombia, South America, and is a 17 year veteran of the Admissions Office. He holds a bachelor of science degree in sport fitness and leisure studies from Salem State College. As the assistant director, Mr. Ibanez brings an abundance of experience in the fields of freshman and transfer admissions, as well as expertise in multi-cultural recruiting and on-campus student group organization. His ability to fluently speak, read and write in English and Spanish, as well as understand the Portuguese, allows him to better serve the large ethnicity that compiles the variety of students in the high school systems.
Jennifer Cooney
Admissions Counselor
Ms. Cooney joined Salem State College in January 2006. With six years of experience in higher education, she previously worked for The College Board as a program assistant, and for the University of California, San Diego, as an undergraduate admissions counselor. She also has experience as an ESL teacher and as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. Ms. Cooney holds a master's degree in higher education in student affairs from Salem State College and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and Spanish from the University of New Hampshire. She enjoys assisting students in a transition period in their lives and helping them work toward achieving their life goals.
M. Jane Friedberg
Admissions Counselor
Ms. Friedberg joined the Admissions Office in 1994. She previously worked for two seasons at Bay State College in Boston. Following graduation from Framingham State College with a bachelor’s degree in education, she taught middle school for nine years. Working with parents, students and high school counselors brings her a great deal of satisfaction. Being part of the phenomenal growth of the college, its campus and academic areas has been exciting and challenging for Ms. Friedberg. She functions as advisor to the tour guides and representative for the New England Apple Program.
Ed Worthy
Admissions Counselor
Mr. Worthy came to Salem State College in September of 2000, where he served as a clerk in the School of Graduate Studies. In 2002, he was promoted to admissions counselor in the undergraduate Admissions Office. Mr. Worthy holds a bachelor in arts degree in history from Salem State and is working on his master's in history at Salem State.
LaSauna Pakeman
Admissions Counselor
Ms. Pakeman received her bachelor's degree from Salem State College in 2008. She joined the Admissions Office team this year and is looking forward to working with prospective students and their families. After graduation, she worked with students in the Learning Center. As a student, Ms. Pakeman served as a resident assistant for three years in Residence Life. She was actively involved with the Multicultural Students Association and Student Government. As a new graduate and an active member of the college community, Ms. Pakeman brings excitement and new experiences to the Admissions Office. She is currently pursuing a master's degree.
