You may have to take one or more admissions tests, depending on the program to which you are applying. Because testing requirements vary by program, check your program's admissions information to confirm all testing requirements.
Explanation of Tests
GMAT - Graduate Management Admissions Test
The Master of Business Administration program requires you to submit official GMAT scores taken within the past five years. Please visit our Bertolon MBA admissions page to learn about our GMAT requirement and exemptions.
GRE - Graduate Record Exam
Some programs require you to take the GRE or MAT. The GRE is not required for all programs; check our program specific admissions requirements. The GRE is a computer-based test that measures verbal, quantitative, and analytical reasoning skills and is administered at test centers throughout the United States.
MAT - Miller Analogies Test
Some programs require you to take the MAT or GRE. The MAT is not required for all programs; check our program specific admissions requirements. Salem State offers the computer-based MAT; appointments can be scheduled by calling 978.542.6323. If you live outside the Salem area call 800.622.3231 for alternate testing sites.
MTEL - Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure
Some of our educator preparation programs require the MTEL. Please refer to the individual program to which you are applying for specific testing requirements. We recommend you visit Salem State’s MTEL Test Preparation Center, which can help you prepare for your MTEL exam(s).
IELTS - International English Language Testing System
If English is not your first language you must submit either IELTS or TOEFL scores.
TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language
If English is not your first language you must submit either TOEFL or IELTS scores. Salem State’s Center for International Education offers the TOEFL on campus; contact 978.542.6351 for more information.
- Generally you are exempt from submitting test scores for the MAT or GRE if you already hold a master's degree or higher. Some programs do require your degree to be in a related field, so check your program’s specific test exemptions.
- You may be exempt from the MTEL if you already hold a teaching license (initial or professional) in the area in which you will be earning your master's degree. You should check with the appropriate graduate program coordinator for more information.
- If you are an MSW applicant with a GPA of a 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), then you are exempt from submitting test scores. The MSW admissions committee determines your GPA.
