Graduate Certificate in Geo-Information Science
Geo-Information Science is the study of applications and technologies surrounding the acquisition, analysis and visualization of spatial data. Geo-Information Science is incorporated into all disciplines that deal with geographic or geospatial data (data linked to some locality on the surface of the earth). These disciplines include Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartography, surveying, the geosciences, computer science, criminal justice, statistics, business and management. Geo-Information Science is utilized in a wide array of public, private and non-profit organizations. Salem State program graduates can be found in all of the following occupations, along with many others:
- Homeland security
- Land use, urban and transportation planning
- Natural resource management
- Criminal justice
- Infrastructure management (electricity, water, roads, etc.)
- Environmental assessment
- Locational analysis
Program Highlights
- Development of a wide variety of skills including GIS, GIS project implementation and management, remote sensing, spatial database, and more
- Hands-on training in leading GIS and remote sensing software packages, including ArcGIS, AutoCAD MAP, ERDAS, IDRISI, MapInfo, and Surfer
- Use of the Salem State College Digital Geography Laboratory (DGL), a state-of-the-art 37-seat facility for GIS education and geospatial data collection, analysis, and display
- Evening courses, designed for working professionals
- All credits earned for a certificate are applied toward the GIS master's degree
