Building a Global Bookshelf Workshop

The Northeast Global Education Center at Salem State College offers the Global Bookshelf project in schools for teachers and children from kindergarten to grade four. In support of the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (UNLD, 2003-2012), the Global Bookshelf  Project promotes global literacy skills and enhances cultural sensitivity in young children.

On February 4, 2010, the Northeast Global Education Center proudly presents the work of Giles Laroche, an acclaimed author and illustrator of children’s books. Mr. Laroche will take us on an architectural journey around the globe with his newest works. In each class Mr. Laroche will read What’s Inside? Fascinating Structures Around the World, view the illustrator’s original art work for the book, and preview the process for writing and illustrating his upcoming publication.

All participating classes receive a book to establish a Global Bookshelf in their rooms. Books for the project are selected and funded by the Northeast Global Education Center. This school-based workshop demonstrates strategies for promoting global education through international selections of children’s literature, folk tales, and national epics. The Global Bookshelf Project is an internationally recognized program that has been presented to children, educators and technology media specialists at professional conferences throughout the United States and in other countries such as Canada, England, and Belgium.
