Sea Level Monitoring in Salem Harbor
Department of Geological Sciences was awarded a 28 year permit to monitor sea level changes in Salem Harbor in collaboration with the National Park Service. The sea level monitoring team consists of students from the department and is lead by Prof. Doug Allen in collaboration with Prof. Brad Hubeny and Prof. Peter Sablock.
Dr. Doug Allen - Department of Energy Grant
Prof. Doug Allen has been awarded a continuance on his collaborative research with the Department of Energy at the National Energy Technology Lab through 2010. Prof. Allen is part of the climate change team. Specifically, he is involved in researching greenhouse gas mitigation strategies such as carbon sequestration and advanced carbon capturing.
Dr. Brad Hubeny - American Chemical Society Grant
Department of Geological Sciences was awarded a two-year grant from the American Chemical Society to study organic carbon processes in Maine lakes in order to better understand environmental and climatic connections. Prof. Brad Hubeny is currently analyzing sediment core samples with SSC Geology students Cam Morissette, M.L. Crispo, and Chip English.
Department of Marine Fisheries
Department of Geological Sciences was awarded a collaborative one-year grant with the Biology Department from the MA Department of Marine Fisheries to restock and monitor soft shell clams in Boston Harbor. Prof. Brad Hubeny and SSC geology students Em Crescenzi and Ellen Kristianson are analyzing sediments from the flats in order to determine what characteristics of the sediments affect clam survival and growth.
Sluice Pond Study
Department of Geological Sciences was awarded a grant from the SSC Graduate School to obtain radiocarbon dates from a Sluice Pond (Lynn) sediment core. This grant supports current environmental research on the lake by Prof. Brad Hubeny and SSC Geology students Em Crescenzi and Jon Lewis.
