Geographers in the Community
Community Activity
The Department of Geography has a pround and active tradition of community engagement. There are formal activities undertaken by the Department as a whole as well as independent work by faculty and staff.
Here are a few of our activities:
Global Education Center
Each semester the Department of Geography through the Global Education Center at Salem State College runs three to six half-day training sessions for Middle School Geography Teachers. An average of 25 teachers participate in each program and topics range form Global Environmental issues to conflict in Northeast Asia.
Center for Sustainability and Economic Development
One of Salem State College's newest initiatives, the Center for Sustainability and Economic Development (CEDS) and Department of Geography faculty members are applying research and providing leadership to a host of North Shore issues.
Earth Day
Each year members from the Department of Geography play a prominent role in running Earth Days at Salem State College, an event which brings students and community members together for a week to support environmental education and action.
