Marybeth Stocking '09, Spanish with a concentration in secondary education

Marybeth Stocking has already started changing the world. A student in the Spanish program pursuing a concentration in secondary education, Marybeth's studies of Spanish have led to several international experiences, including a summer study abroad with the department's program in Oviedo, Spain, in 2007 and a trip to Cuba in summer 2008.

Traveling with a non-profit group of nonviolent political activists, Marybeth and her companions succeeded in crossing the border to bring humanitarian aid, medical supplies and a message of peace and solidarity to impoverished Cubans, while also learning about the richness of Cuban culture and society. Marybeth wrote about her time in Cuba in an article in the fall 2008 issue of Lingua Franca, the Department's bi-annual newsletter.

Marybeth said that in Cuba, "The sense of community concern for the welfare of all inspires me and gives me hope."
