Christina Welsh, major in Social Work
"I had gone to school in Boston prior to coming to Salem. One of the things I loved about Salem State was how close it was to my hometown.
Before applying to Salem State I had just returned from a four month stay in Costa Rica. I was working as a teacher in a school in a very rural and poor town. My experience there made me realize that I wanted to do something with my life that would help others, for me this was being a social worker.
I have had a very positive experience at Salem State. I have made some great friendships both with students and faculty. I have spent the last year interning at the Federal Probation Department in Boston working with offenders, primarily with substance abuse addictions. I will be able to continue working with substance abusers after graduation at CAB detox where I will be working full-time.
I have many memorable experiences, but the friends and supports I have made are something I can take with me after leaving Salem State."
