This study/travel seminar provides students with a unique opportunity to visit one of the Caribbean’s most popular tourist destinations - Barbados. Whilst Barbados boasts some of the world’s most attractive beachfronts which draw visitors from across the world – it also provides an ideal platform for experiential learning for Salem State Students. Engaging a range of disciplines and themes, this trip offers a critical examination of the unique experiences, challenges and practices of Caribbean tourism. Professor Noel Healy (geography), and faculty from the University of West Indies will explore key issues relating to the management and sustainability of this world renowned tourist destination. Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture, explore a Caribbean haven, bask in the sunshine, whilst at the same time exploring and critically observing the challenges of maintaining and managing a tourist-dependent economy. Whilst in Barbados students will be required to keep a journal and gather material to complete portfolios.
