K Brewer Doran
K. Brewer Doran is Dean of the Bertolon School of Business at Salem State University, where she is leading the effort to achieve AACSB accreditation. Dr. Doran possesses a diverse background in teaching, research and management. She has taught at a variety of universities in the United States and Canada, including Babson College, McGill University and California Polytechnic State University, and is a specialist in global marketing and management as well as consumer behavior.
Prior to joining Salem State in August 2005, Dr. Doran was the founding Dean of the School of Business and Information Science at Lasell College, where she was responsible for four departments: Business, Fashion, Hospitality and Information Science. Dean Doran was a co-chair for the College's decennial re-accreditation through NEASC (the New England Association of Schools and Colleges) in 2002, and developed and implemented the new Master of Science in Management degree and led the process for its approval through the State of Massachusetts Board of Higher Education and NEASC. Dr. Doran also led the Graduate School through her appointment as its director, and as Director of International Programs she oversaw international students, study abroad, and international faculty engagements.
An internationally known researcher and confirmed globalist, with a specialty in Chinese consumer behavior, Dr. Doran was named "Outstanding Scholar in Chinese Marketing" in 2002 by the Society for Marketing Advances and the Chinese Golden Tri-pod Award Committee. Her primary research area is in decision making, both in a cross-cultural context and in Internet-based purchasing processes. Her global focus resulted in a Senior Specialist Fulbright grant in Uganda in early 2003.
In the private sector, she has held positions with International Paper and Harbridge House in sales, marketing, finance, strategic planning and consulting, as well as having owned her own aviation and consulting businesses. Dean Doran is also a licensed commercial pilot, with both multi-engine and instrument ratings. As a consultant, Dr. Doran has worked with high tech firms, aviation organiza-tions, financial firms and resort firms as well as a wide variety of organizations concerned with market entry into China.
Dean Doran also appears regularly in the media as an expert commentator, primarily on consumer issues and China business issues. She has been featured on National Public Radio, Voice of America, and all the Boston area network affiliates as well as a broad cross-section of newspapers, from the Washington Post to the Boston Globe to Mass High Tech magazine. She is a regular commentator on New England Cable News. Dean Doran is also President of the Board of the House of the Seven Gables, a Corporator of the Beverly Cooperative Bank, a Commissioner of the Essex National Heritage Area and a director of the Massachusetts Organization of Older Americans.
Dr. Doran holds an AB from Dartmouth College (cum laude, senior fellow), an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia, and a PhD from McGill University.
