Student Teaching Abroad Program

Do Your Student Teaching in England

Salem State's Student Teaching Program in England is a half-practicum placement that takes place in Yorkshire through the joint efforts of Salem State and Bradford College U.K. It has been an option for Salem State students for more than twenty-five years and, as an accredited program, satisfies the requirements for teaching licensure at all levels: Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle School and Secondary Education. Both graduate and undergraduate students are welcome to apply. Supervision of the experience is under the direction of faculty from both institutions.

Students enrolled in the program do the first half of their student teaching program here in the United States. The second half placements are in Local Authority Schools in Ilkley, England at both the primary and secondary levels. Housing is provided in the lovely Victorian village of Ilkley, located in the moorlands of West Yorkshire. Yorkshire offers to the student-traveler opportunity for many cultural and recreational experiences. For the history buff there are castles, the walled city of York, Bolton Abbey, and Ripon Minster to explore. The lover of English literature will delight in finding the parsonage home of the Bronte sisters in nearby Haworth, while the nature lover has many footpaths in the moors to hike. For the city person, Leeds, a major cosmopolitan city, offers several options for theater, shopping, dining and further study at universities, libraries, museums and art galleries.

The program has been presented as an innovative model at professional conferences held throughout the United States and at world congresses in Australia and South Africa. Also, Salem State's Student Teaching Program was cited in the Australian Journal of Teacher Education as an exemplary program for internationalizing teacher education.

Students have been placed in Beacon Schools, cited in Great Britain as exemplary models for excellence in achievement at the primary level and in secondary schools with international acclaim for innovative programs in technology. Student teachers have received recognition for curriculum development of Global Education projects implemented in their student teaching and honors research projects on comparative education with awards/grants from the Northeast Global Education Center.
