The Salem State University School of Social Work welcomes you to our website! The mission of our school is to provide students with the knowledge, values and skills required for excellence as social work practitioners. Students learn from outstanding faculty who are deeply committed to social work education and to supporting the development of students as social work professionals.

Our faculty members are passionate teachers. Many are also practitioners, researchers, and scholars whose active engagement in the field ensures that students are prepared for contemporary social work practice.

Our current curriculum specializations, health/mental health, children and families, and older adults/end of life, provide opportunities for our students to pursue their particular areas of interest. Field education in our social work curriculum provides students with direct practice experience in an array of organizations on the North Shore, in Greater Boston, and beyond.

Salem State School of Social Work has a history of distinction in public social work education dating back to 1969 when social work became an undergraduate major. The bachelor's of social work (BSW) degree began in 1980 and, in 1986, Salem State launched the first master's of social work (MSW) program in a public institution in Massachusetts. We provide a high quality, affordable education in a rich university environment where our graduates are prepared to practice in a diverse world.

I encourage you to explore our social work programs—join us for an open house, visit a class and/or talk to our distinguished faculty, students and alumni. Our graduates are skilled, compassionate, and culturally responsive practitioners who make a profound difference in the lives of people, organizations and communities, both locally and globally.

Thanks for your interest and we look forward to meeting you!

Carol E. Bonner, MSW, MBA, EdD, Associate Dean
