Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in English

The MAT in English is a balanced program of reflection and research in principles and practices for instruction of English language and literature, with particular emphasis upon contemporary methodology.

Licensure

If you seek an initial teaching license, successful completion of the program leads to initial licensure to teach English in Massachusetts at the secondary level (8-12).

After you have completed three years of teaching with your Initial license, your MAT in English degree has enough credits in the English content area that it can also be used toward your Professional teaching license.  However, you must apply separately for your Professional license through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

(NOTE:  Preliminary licensure is required for entrance to the MAT program; if you already have your Initial license please apply for the MA in English not the MAT in English, until further notice.)

Accreditation

Our program is rigorous and exceeds professional standards. We have earned accreditation at state and national levels, such as NCATE and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
