Pre-Columbian societies and Spanish and Portuguese conquest and colonialism, social relations in the colonies, and the growth of nationalist movements leading to independence in the nineteenth century. The course focuses on Mexico, the Andean region, the Caribbean, and Brazil as examples of different patterns of slave society, mestizaje, religious syncretism, indigenous and peasant rebellion, and complex alliances leading to national independence and identity. Not open to students who have received credits for HIS 730R.
