A study of the history of the novel throughout the world up to 1850. Topics usually covered will include long prose fiction in classical Europe and Asia prior to the late European renaissance, the rise of the novel in European national literatures during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Romantic novel and the rise of the Balzacian realism. Three lecture hours per week. Not open to students who have received credit for ENG327..
