Teacher Licensure Program: English Major requirements for students who minor in Secondary Education (36 credits)
The English Major - Secondary Education Minor prepares students to teach English at the secondary level (8-12). Students who complete the program successfully will earn a Massachusetts Initial License. Salem State College's Initial Licensure program in English is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education and accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
The current flow sheet describes the sequence of study in the program, the requirements for entering the pre-practicum, and the practicum. Required courses include ENG323; ENG325 or ENG423; ENG331, ENG332 or ENG432; ENG400, ENG489, ENG502.
Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 overall AND a minimum GPA of 3.0 in ENG and EDU courses to be admitted to the Licensure program. They must also maintain those averages to stay in the program. All Licensure candidates must pass the Communications and Literacy Skills portion of the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) before being admitted to the pre-practicum methods course (EDU335), and must pass the Subject-Matter Test in English before the practicum (EDU498, student teaching).
