Application Materials
- Completed Admissions Application.
- A $50 non-refundable application fee made payable to Salem State - check or money order.
Complete, official transcript documenting the award of a bachelor's degree in an arts and sciences major, or a major appropriate to the teaching license sought and any graduate courses taken or degrees held. - Three completed Reference for Graduate Admission forms. References may attach a letter, but must also return the form.
- Official copy of scores from either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) taken within the last five years. Those who already hold a master's degree or higher are exempt from this requirement.
- Students for whom English is not a first language must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores.
- Statement of purpose (500- to 1,000-words, double-spaced) addressing the following questions:
-What factors in your personal and professional history have influenced you in the past and now lead you to seek admission to this program at Salem State?
-What are your long-term professional goals, and how will this program help you meet them?
-Is there any other information that you think would help the admissions committee to evaluate your application?
Additional Materials, Requirements, and Prerequisites
The program has several requirements applicants must meet before their application can be considered. Also, students with no teacher preparation course work should consult with the program coordinator.
- A photocopy of teacher's license(s) that you my hold and score on the Massachusetts Tests of Educator Licensure (MTEL), both the Communication and Literacy portion and History portion.
- Undergraduate or graduate course in adolescent psychology.
- At least the equivalent of a minor in history (15-18 undergraduate credit hours).
- Demonstrated competency in the following areas: world history, U.S. history, world geography, economics, principles of American government and the founding documents of the United States, comparative government, and history and philosophy of science.
Application Deadlines
- We recommend that you apply no later than May 1 for fall enrollment, October 1 for spring enrollment and February 1 for summer enrollment.
- Please be advised that applications will not be reviewed until they are complete (all required materials are received). Completed applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
