Focus on an aspect of United States history or learn from world-class historians in African history, Asian history, European history, Latin American history, and Russia and East European history. Regardless of your interests, you will find an abundance of sources to support your scholarship and research—in Salem, on the North Shore, and within a short drive (click here for more information).

The program consists of 33 credit hours of course work, including Historiography and a Research Seminar. There are three capstone options:  thesis, comprehensive examinations, or a portfolio. We also offer a 39 credit option for those who do not complete a capstone event.

You must also take at least one distribution course in each of the following four areas:

  • African, Asian or Latin American History
  • American History
  • European History
  • Public History
