Chemistry Society
The Council of the American Chemical Society recognized the formation of an official Student Affiliate Chapter at SSC. It is located in MH 426A. Faculty advisors are Dr. Christine MacTaylor, Dr. Ron MacTaylor and Dr. Emily Rowland.
William Adams Award
The William Adams Award is awarded by the Department of Chemistry and Physics to the most outstanding junior student studying Biochemistry. The winning student's name is engraved on a plaque that will hang near the department office. The student also is awarded registration, hotel, and travel costs to attend a Northeast Regional meeting of the American Chemical Society (NERM-ACS).
Frederick Meier Award
This award is endowed by the family of Frederick A. Meier. Dr. Meier was a part of the College from faculty member to President. There are two awards in the amount of $750 each, one to a Chemistry major and one to a Biology major.
The Awards will be announced at the end of the Spring semester so that they can be used during the next year. The Award can be used in a single semester or spread out over two semesters. The two annual awards of $750 will be awarded according to the principles and guidelines on the application form, which can be obtained from the department office.
It is given to the most outstanding junior or senior chemistry major to be used for tuition, books, conference expenses, or research costs.
CRC Press Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award
This is awarded by the Department of Chemistry and Physics in conjunction with the CRC Press to the most outstanding freshman chemistry student as selected by the department. The student receives a complimentary hardcover copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics and a commemorative scroll bearing their name.
Analytical Award
This award is given to the most outstanding junior analytical student.
American Institute of Chemists Foundation Award
This award is given to the most outstanding senior chemistry major. The winning student receives a certificate and a one year Student Associate membership in the AIC.
Top Senior Assessment Award
Students enrolled in Chemistry Senior seminar annually participate in a national standardized assessment tool. The top scorer has their name engraved on a plaque to honor this achievement.
