Student Development

All Learning at Salem State College does not take place solely in the classroom.  Students who enter the College through our pre-college transition programs participate in various activities that help to insure their success outside of the classroom.  Through weekly individual appointments, group meetings, and a variety of workshops held throughout the semester, our Student Development Coordinators play an integral role in developing the whole student.  Each student is assigned a designated student development coordinator who meets with them on a weekly basis.  These meetings allow our coordinators to monitor the academic progress of each student and to address any problems that may arise.  The student development coordinators also conduct various workshops; some of which include: classroom etiquette, information literacy (using library resources to enhance student learning), getting involved on campus, and selecting majors and minors.  Further, the student development team works closely with other offices on campus including, but not limited to Counseling and Health Services, Career Services, Financial Aid, and Academic Advising.

The Student Development Coordinators seek to:

  • develop an awareness of educational and career goals of each student
  • Serve as a role model through year-long mentoring
  • provide assistance in helping students obtain financial aid
  • provide academic and career advising
  • help students develop self-confidence, self-determination and self-esteem

When I found out I had to attend the Student Academic Support Services' Summer Program in May of 2007, I wa disappointed knowing I had to spend most of my summer in school, but I made the best of it. Because of the academic resources that were available to me through Student Academic Support Services,  I am now in my second year and I couldn't be happier. They offer a comfortable enviornment where you can be yourself, speak to your advisor, or study in the computer lounge.  The staff is incredible, respectful and they genuinely care about you both as a student and a young adult; they want you to succeed.

Student Academic Support Services has made an impact on my life in a positive way.  With the dedication and determination of the advisors and the helpful support of the tutors, they have improved the student academic status.  Student Academic Support Services is essential and a tremendous asset to the college community. It brings a great deal of diversity to Salem State College.
