Reading Workshop
Reading workshops at Salem State are designed to help students who have not satisfied the university's reading competency. Students referred to the reading workshop participate in a series of workshops that will enhance comprehension levels, fortify content area study skills, and test taking abilities. The goal of the reading workshop is to engage students in active reading comprehension strategies that allow them to gain and transfer meaning from text to the demands of college-level tasks. Using college textbooks and other materials, students will work on any of the following combination of active reading skills:
- Pre-reading strategies
- Topic and topic sentences
- Summary and response
- Structure and development of the sentence, paragraph or essay
- Vocabulary Development
- Theme and Thesis
- Research and Documentation
- Critical Reading and Thinking
- Study and Test-Taking Strategies
