The Newburyport/Rockport commuter train connects to Rockport and Gloucester to the north and to North Station in Boston to the south. The ride is approximately 30 minutes each way. The Salem train station is located at the intersection of Washington and Bridge streets in downtown Salem. Salem State provides students with downtown shuttle bus service that makes regular stops at the train station. There is no charge for the service. See the complete route at

You may purchase train tickets at the train station or on the train. Please note: Tickets purchased on the train usually cost more.


Bus #455, #455W and #459 run from State University at Loring Avenue to Boston. These buses also go from the Salem train station to Boston. There are different rates depending on your destination. You may either pay cash or use the plastic Charlie Card.
