SEVIS Information

SEVIS is the computerized system that collects and maintains information on the current status of non-immigrant students, exchange visitors and their dependents during their stay in the United States. Before you can apply for an F-1 (student visa), you must pay a student/exchange visitor fee, which will pay for the SEVIS database.

You can pay the fee by internet or by mail

To pay online:
Fill out Form I-901, which can be found online at If you pay online, you must pay using a credit card.

To pay by mail:
Fill out Form  I-901  [PDF]

Send a check or money order. Do not send cash. All checks and money orders:

  • must be in US dollars and from a bank in the United States
  • must be made out to 'I-901 Student/Exchange Visitor Processing Fee' 
  • must have the student's name and SEVIS identification number (item #15 on the form) written on it  
  • must be for the exact amount of the fee

A fee will be charged if the check in not honored by the bank (if the check bounces).

Forms that are not filled in correctly or are not accompanied by the correct payment will be sent back to you and cause an additional delay in processing. Fees will not be refunded, even if you are not given the visa.

When filling in the I-901 Form, make sure to:

  1. write your name exactly as it appears on your I-20 form. You will receive a receipt that shows that you have paid the fee, so be certain to write the address where you would like the receipt to be sent.
  2. write the name of the street and the building or house number
  3. write the name of the city and the name of the province (if there is one)
  4. If the address is in the United States, write the two-letter abbreviation of the state (If the address is not in the US, do not fill this section in.)
  5. enter the name of the country
  6. enter the postal code or zip code
  7. list your date of birth: month/day/year 
  8. check male or female
  9. enter the name of the city where you were born
  10. enter the name of the country where you were born (as listed on your I-20)
  11. enter the name of the country of which you are a citizen (as listed on your I-20)
  12. enter the school identification number listed on your I-20 (for Salem State University, the number is:  BOS214F00503000)
  13. enter the SEVIS identification number listed in the upper right-hand corner of the I-20, under 'Student's Copy' (the number will begin with an 'N' and has 10 numbers after the N)
  14. enter your passport number 
  15. check box A (marked F/M only). The receipt that shows you have paid the fee will be mailed to you.
  16. If you would like the receipt to be sent by airmail, check box A. You will not have to pay extra.  If you would like the receipt to be sent by expedited delivery, check box B. You will have to pay $30.
  17. add the amount from the box checked in item 17 ($200) and the amount in item 18 (either 0 or $30). This is what you owe. Please send one check or money order for this amount.
