TRIO Student Support Service Program
Salem State's TRIO SSS program provides comprehensive support services to eligible part-time and full-time matriculated students from low-income backgrounds, to those whose parents did not graduate from college and to those with learning--or physical disabilities. Our program offers eligible students comprehensive basic skills training, developmental education opportunities, counseling, and a variety of other support services. Program activities meet student's individual needs and enable them to develop the skills and direction they will need to fulfill their educational and vocational goals.
Our primary program mission is the retention and graduation of participants. We accomplish this by providing participants academic support in various disciplines, academic advising and financial assistance.
Needs Assessment
Following an analysis of each student's strengths and weaknesses in various skill areas, we design individual comprehensive academic/counseling plans.
Reading and Study Skills Services
Appointments for individual reading and study skills tutorials are scheduled depending on the nature and extent of each student's needs. These tutorials are designed to improve reading efficiency, test taking strategies, note taking skills, and time management.
Science Services
The TRIO SSS program teaches study skills geared specifically toward science for students who need to develop and improve their understanding of this discipline. The tutorials clarify complex concepts through individual and small groups. Lab work and lecture materials are covered as well.
Writing and Grammar Services
The writing program addresses students' composition and research needs. Grammar/ESL students are exposed to grammar rules, sentence structure, punctuation, and editing. Through supportive activities, they are encouraged to brainstorm, pre-write, outline, compose, edit, and revise their work.
Mathematics and Computer Science Services
Mathematics and computer science skills development is available in individualized and small group support sessions for students currently enrolled in mathematics and computer courses, as well as those planning to enroll in the future. Tutorials provide assistance with problems and concepts presented in class.
Course Tutorials
TRIO SSS students who need help in particular courses receive individualized assistance from qualified tutors. The objective is to increase students' academic success while helping them become independent, self-confident and more efficient learners.
Counseling Services
TRIO SSS students are provided with a comprehensive counseling program tailored to their individual needs. This includes, among other matters, academic advising, assistance with academic planning, financial aid counseling, and guidance in course selection and registration. Career counseling is also available to help students choose majors and/or minors. Interest tests are available for those who wish to explore career possibilities.
The TRIO SSS program at Salem State University is federally funded by the United States Department of Education in the amount of $464,931 annually.
