PRE-DEPARTURE ORIENTATION – SUMMER AND FALL 2013 PARTICIPANTS

To best prepare you for your studies abroad, the Center for International Education (CIE) has organized a mandatory study abroad orientation program for all summer and fall 2013 study abroad participants.

DATE: Reading Day, Thursday, May 2, 2013

TIME: 3-4:30 pm

LOCATION: Harrington Building, Room 201, South Campus

WHAT TO BRING: passport, health insurance information

Please also invite your parents so that we can provide them information and answer any of their questions as well.

Salem State University requires all study abroad students to fill out various release forms, insurance documents, and financial documents before leaving for their studies abroad. It is, therefore, mandatory that you attend the Orientation to fill out the required forms.

Additionally, if you have not paid the SSU registration fee, you will be required to do so at this time. Until you pay the fee, we will not be able to register you as a study abroad student or transfer any of your overseas credits so it is important that we receive this payment before or at the orientation.

We look forward to seeing you on May 2. Please RSVP before Friday, April 26 by emailing msohr@salemstate.edu or by calling 978.542.6351 or 978.542.7105.

Visas

Since you traveling as a student rather than a tourist, you might need documentation to enter certain countries. Some countries will require a student visa (issued by the host country, not the United States State Department); other consulates may want a letter from the educational institution with which you are associated (Salem State University), describing the purpose of your visit. Please contact the Center for International Education to arrange for this certification letter.

Your visa may take some time to process and may require you to obtain health records and a statement of financial solvency. Securing all the proper documentation can sometimes be a real exercise in frustration, but don't put it off. CIE can help. Many program providers will assist you by including visa instructions and an application in your acceptance package.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT IDENTITY CARD (ISIC)

STA Travel offers an international student identification card that also affords you reduced fees on airfares, international phone calls, international money transfers, lodging, museums, and cultural events. The ISIC carries a basic accident and sickness insurance package and provides a 24-hour international toll-free hotline for help in medical, legal or financial emergencies.

You may obtain this card through the Center for International Education (CIE). Please bring a check or money order, payable to Salem State University. (Non-Salem State students need to bring proof of enrollment in their current school.)
