Workshops and Performance with Jazz Pianist and Scholar Lewis Porter
Jazz pianist, composer and author Lewis Porter will be on campus leading several workshops and classes in the music department on Monday, October 29 and Tuesday, October 30. Monday, October 29 includes a Community Time session: Bringing World Music Into Improvisation. This will take place at 11 am in the Recital Hall. Porter will host a jazz piano workshop that afternoon at 4 pm. The day wraps up with Porter and members of the music department's jazz faculty performing from 7 to 10 pm at Chianti's restaurant in Beverly. All of these events are free and open to members of the Salem State community.
Dr. Porter is a professor at Rutgers University and is a leading scholar and historian of all eras of jazz. He is the author or coauthor of seven books and numerous articles on jazz and a regular consultant to record producers, publishers, and producers of jazz radio show and films. His publications include the acclaimed study John Coltrane: His Life and Music, winner of the Jazz Research Award from the Association of Recorded Sound Collections and the Prix du livre de Jazz from the Academy of Jazz in Paris.
