On April 15, seven Salem State student leaders, accompanied by Assistant Dean of Students Dr. Lee Brossoit, traveled to the Massachusetts State House to lobby for public education, and meet with state senators and representatives.

They were joined at what has come to be known as "State House Day" by student representatives from Bridgewater State, Fitchburg State, Framingham State, Massachusetts College of Art, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Westfield State, and Worcester State, all sister institutions in the Commonwealth's public higher education system.

In their individual meetings with legislators, the Salem State students not only advocated for more education funding, but used the opportunity to inform their representatives and senators about their personal experiences with public higher education and the value they place on it.

The annual event also gives young student leaders a chance to see the inner workings of government. A number of the Salem State students also had the opportunity this year to watch the college's president, Dr. Patricia Maguire Meservey, testify before the Joint Commission on Higher Education.
