Sport and Movement Science Major Recipient of Three Major Awards
Salem State College senior Shannon Komow, daughter of Nancy and Tom Komow of Waltham, is the recent recipient of three prestigious awards, one of them at the national level.
The sport and movement science major with a concentration in physical education was honored this spring by both the eastern district of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and the larger Massachusetts Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance with their Outstanding Future Professional Award.
Nationally, she received an Outstanding Major of the Year Award from the National Association of Sport and Physical Education. The award is presented annually to junior or senior students from across the country majoring in physical education, sport management, athletic training, or kinesiology who have maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and who have demonstrated service to their school or community for a minimum of two years during their undergraduate career.
Nominated by her professors, Shannon has shown uncommon commitment to her discipline, demonstrated through her academic achievement, her involvement in both MAHPERD and AAHPERD, her volunteer work, and extensive community service in her field. Among her contributions, Komow worked on a "Massachusetts Report Card" in physical education that has been printed and distributed to public schools throughout Massachusetts.
