Anti Virus
Viruses are released into the workplace on a daily basis, and are transmitted by email, computer disk, thumb drive, and over the Internet. The complicated threat landscape today requires sophisticated protection from large-scale malware to the most targeted attacks
Over the years it has become necessary for antivirus software to check an increasing variety of files, rather than just executables, for several reasons:
- Powerful macros used in word processor applications, such as Microsoft Word, presented a risk. Virus writers could use the macros to write viruses embedded within documents. This meant that computers could now also be at risk from infection by opening documents with hidden attached macros.
- The possibility of embedding executable objects inside otherwise non-executable file formats can make opening those files a risk.
- Later email programs were vulnerable to viruses embedded in the email body itself. A user's computer could be infected by just opening or previewing a message
Salem State is now using Microsoft Essentials and Microsoft Forefront to help deliver end-to-end security and access to information. Microsoft Forefront is a family of line-of-business security software by Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft Forefront products are designed to help protect computer networks, network servers and individual devices
What Can You Do?
It is very important that all computers be updated with the new Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection by May 5. After that date the license for your Kaspersky AV client will expire and will no longer receive updates putting your computer at risk.
We will be monitoring the rollout of the Endpoint Protection throughout the process and should be aware through the software’s system management console if your computer does not successfully receive the update. We will contact you and arrange for a manual installation if your computer doesn’t receive the automatic update.
