Effective Dates of Coverage for New Hires
The Group Insurance Commission determines the effective date for new employees for all Group Insurance Commission benefits including: Health Insurance, Basic Life Insurance, and Long and Term Disability Insurance. GIC benefits begin on the first day of the month following 60 calendar days or two calendar months of employment, whichever comes first. Your basic life and health insurance benefits are provided on a pre-tax basis unless you opt to have them taken out "post tax". The new hire dental coverage effective date depends on the Union Trust Agreement that is applicable to the employee (see dental section).

Qualifying Events:
There are qualifying events i.e. marriage/divorce/remarriage/birth/adoption/death of spouse (see this section) during which employees can enroll in benefits outside of the annual enrollment and new hire period. If you will be on an unpaid leave check out the leave section to see how your benefits may be affected.
