Internships

What is an Internship?

  • An internship allows you to gain practical experience related to your studies or career interests. An internship can be done for credit or non-credit during fall, spring or summer and is a semester-long experience. Typically, students intern 8-20 hours per week but summer internships can either be part-time or full-time.  An internship can be paid or unpaid.  The student intern has a supervisor at the internship site with experience in the student’s area of interest.

The main difference between an internship and a part-time position is that an internship allows a student to learn about a particular area of interest and provides exposure to a career field requiring a college major. The focus of an internship is to provide a learning experience for a student. The other difference between a part-time job and an internship is that an internship is a semester-long experience.

Credit internships MUST be approved by your academic department prior to the experience!
